StarSeries Budapest 2025 Group Stage Replaced by Online Qualifier
Tournament organizer StarLadder has announced major changes to the format of the upcoming StarLadder StarSeries Budapest 2025 Counter-Strike 2 championship. Instead of the traditional group stage and regional qualifiers, the tournament will feature a single European online qualifier.
Originally, the group stage was planned as a LAN event, but it has now been scrapped in favor of a more compact and universal format. According to the official announcement, the decision was made in close coordination with Valve, the developer of CS2.
"The format was revised to minimize overlap with other CS2 tournaments, simplify organizational processes, and ensure a high level of competition during the playoff stage," StarLadder stated in their announcement.

Qualifier Format
The single online qualifier will take place from August 13 to 17, 2025. It will feature 16 teams invited based on the VRS ranking — StarLadder’s proprietary ranking system. The list of participants has not yet been revealed.
This structure allows teams from various regions to compete on equal footing while avoiding the costs and logistical challenges of travel-based events. The online format also speeds up the process and adds flexibility in a crowded tournament calendar.

Main Stage Remains Unchanged
The final stage of StarLadder StarSeries Budapest 2025 will proceed as originally scheduled in an offline format from September 18 to 21. The tournament will be hosted in the Hungarian capital, Budapest. Eight teams will compete for the championship title: four advancing from the online qualifier and four directly invited squads.
It's not yet known which teams will receive direct invites, but they are likely to include top-tier European and international lineups. More details are expected closer to the qualifier dates.
Conclusion
StarLadder’s decision to replace the LAN group stage with a single online qualifier appears to be a pragmatic move — streamlining the tournament structure and intensifying competition during the qualifiers. Now, all eyes are on the August qualifier, which will determine half of the participants for the prestigious Budapest event.
